The 15 Puzzle playbook

Make 15 Puzzle your next activity in the game library. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Use the example below to understand a decision. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Use the example below to understand a decision.

A small practice goal

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Keep the objective visible.

Aim for this result

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Keep the controls in easy reach.

The order of play

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Choosing and moving on screen

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

Work through an example

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Read the matching step again.

Where a round can go wrong

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Compare the situation with the worked example. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
